Where to measure
Measure width across the base. End lengths run from the first/last fold axis to the corresponding end. Spacing P is the distance between neighboring axes on the straight outer wall, not inner clearance or a finished bend radius. The final change of direction is fixed at 90°.
Formula and construction
For n = 3, each angle α = 90° / n = 30°. Half-notch d = W × tan(α / 2); each opening is 2d. Fold stations xᵢ = L + iP, i = 0…n−1. Stock length = L + (n−1)P + T. These are straight retained-edge dimensions.
Worked example
With a 200 mm base width, each opening is 107.18 mm. At L = T = 350 mm and P = 300 mm, stock length is 1300 mm; the 3 axes are at 350, 650, 950 mm.
Method limits
Thin-sheet, zero-radius geometry. Kerf, rolled lips, bend allowance, cable radius, joint strength and fastener specifications are not calculated. The direction-change angle is not the remaining included angle. Use the actual tray manufacturer’s connection detail.
About this construction
This is TrayNeo’s ideal solid-base, retained-outer-wall construction. The half-angle relation is derived geometrically; adding equal bends does not establish a manufacturer-approved fitting, cable radius or connection specification.
